Cartographica Version 1.2 (build 321)

Cartographica 1.2

This major feature version contains a wide array of new features and enhancements to existing features.

Cartographica 1.2 requires Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

If you download 1.2 and need to use it under 10.5, please download an older version from the archives.

Known bugs/issues

WFS access is read only. No changes are saved to the server.

WFS client retrieves too much data in some queries.

New Features

Much more sophisticated handling of colors for creation of chloropleth maps. The Color Palette window (previously the Color Map window) can now be dropped on any layer. When dropped on an analysis or image layer, the color palette for that layer is changed. When dropped on a feature layer, the fill colors for each feature set are set in order to the colors in the palette. When the Style window is visible, dropping on the style list will change the fill colors of each set of features. To change the stroke color instead, hold the option key while dropping on the style list. Colors can also be dragged from an existing layer into the palette by dragging the layer into the palette window, thus creating a new palette entry.

Cartographica now supports editing, saving, and creating of palettes. Use the Color Palette window and the +/- buttons to add and remove palettes. To add a color to an existing palette, click on the grayed-out color box next to the existing colors.

Text containing palette information (such as that which may be copied from the ColorBrewer site) that takes the form r,g,b;r,g,b;... can be pasted directly into the palette window, creating a new palette.

New symbol selection mechanism for point features: now this is done through drag and drop from the symbol palette (or any image on your system). PDF, EPSF, and almost any type of graphic can be used to set the point marker. If Stroke is turned on, the software will replace the blacks in the image with the stroke color and the whites with the fill color (keeping all other colors the same as in their original and respecting the alpha channel).

Geocoding can now be done in layers that are already loaded, as opposed to being done only during the import process. Configure the Geocoding Options for your mapset (or use the new Bing Geocoder defaults), then select the items to geocode and choose Geocode Selected from the Analysis menu. Or, if you have partially completed geocode data, select Geocode Uncoded to add geometry data to features which don't currently have geometry. If the CRS of the geocoder that you are using does not match the CRS of the layer, the points will be reprojected automatically.

Support for Bing Maps. For all existing and new customers, we will be providing free use of Bing Maps geocoding and imagery services until your support contract runs out. After that time, you may renew support to continue using the Bing services. Bing maps provides fast, high resolution roads and imagery services. There are some limitations to the use of imagery from Bing for production purposes, so please note that you are not granted a license for republishing rights of this data.

Support for Bing Geocoding services. Bing Geocoding works in many countries throughout the world and contains more up-to-date information than is available from many sources. It also requires no configuration to get started, just select your input data and geocode. This feature, like the Bing Maps services, is part of our ongoing support package. If you need to geocode using your own data (for example, historical information or if you have proprietary geocoding data), that option is still available through the Geocoder Options...

Live Map support using OpenStreetMap, WMS, and OpenStreetMap-like servers. To add an OpenStreetMap or Bing live map to your mapset, choose Add Live Map... from the file menu and select the type of map and the server. If necessary, your Map Projection will be changed to match the live layer if the layer cannot be reasonably reprojected. To add a WMS map as a live map, follow the standard instructions for downloading a static copy of WMS data, but make sure the "Download as Static Imagery" is unchecked.

WFS servers are supported for access to network-stored data, including auto-discovery of schemas (requires the server to support schema information) and determination of SRS, as well as reloading data from the server.

Support for computed columns in any feature layer (this includes adding computed columns to WFS layers!). Unless there are other changes made that directly affect the data in the system, computed columns will not cause the data itself to be brought internal to the mapset, unless it already was. Computed columns can use any data from the other columns in the layer, plus a large number of built-in math functions (see list) and a growing list of built-in geometry functions. To add a computed column, add a column in the Layer Info window and click on Set Formula.. then drag columns from the column list in the lower half of the screen to the function area in the upper half (columns are color-coded by type). Columns (that are not locked) with geometry calculations will recompute when the geometry changes. If the functions are in map coordinates, they will also recompute when the map crs changes.

Labels are now being handled in a completely new fashion, allowing multi-line, multi-value, multi-style labels. Font handling is done using the standard Macintosh font window and both text and column data can be inserted into the labels. Any selectable area may be styled for font, color, etc.

Layer bounding-box invisibility is now supported. This makes it easier to use a single large background map for multiple mapsets without having to be constantly zoomed in. Load the image layer by reference (using standard Import Raster Data...) and then uncheck the item in the Layer menu for Include in Map Extent to make the bounding-box invisible. When this item is unchecked, the extent of the specified layer will only be used in calculating the map extent when it is the only layer visible. Otherwise, all layers whose Include in Map Extent item is checked will be used to calculate this, but those that do not will not.

Projection management. Cartographica now provides for editing and manipulation of user-defined projections. To add a new projecion, use the + or duplicate commands to duplicate an existing definition, or drop a prj, wkt, or text file containing information in WKT, ESRI WKT, or Proj4 format into the Project Map or Set Layer's Projection window.

Layer control in Map Layout windows. Now, the visible layers in both Map objects and Legend objects may be edited separately from their original maps. Use the context menu (right-click or control-click) to change layer settings for the Map and the same for the Legend. In the case of the legend, any layers that are not visible in the associated Map object will not be visible in the legend. Use this, for example, to remove background data from the Legend when it is not important.

Cartographica now has the ability to add and modify georeferencing information on imagery. This can be done non-destructively (in Cartographica's internal reference to the image) or can be used to write out the layer based on the new georeference, creating a georeferenced TIFF file by choosing Export Layer Image... from the File menu. Georeferencing can be done using the standard matrix transform or by adding ground control points (GCPs) to an image. To do either, select the image in the image layer and then choose the Edit Feature command from the Edit menu in order to bring up the georeferncing display. From this display, you may edit the transform (by entering numbers or using trackpad gestures or even gestures in the Wacom Bamboo). If you prefer to use GCPs, then change the tab to Ground Control Points and you will be able to add, modify and remove them, either through the list in the window or by using option-click to add new ground control points and drag them in the image window itself. Use the transparency control to see the underlying layers while you align your imagery. On the display, ground control points are shown as barbels, with the green point representing the point in the image and the red point representing the point in the coordinate space.

Enhanced Features

KML Point Images now exported based on selected point type. This is particularly important when you export for use on Google Maps, since it requires an external marker, unlike Google Earth. These are exported in the same directory as the KML file and has a derivative name (foo-icon.png when the kml file is foo.kml).

KML Exporter now supports exporting imagery

Multiple style sets may be edited at the same time by selecting them in the list, including the default style. Any changes to common controls will change all selected styles. For example, select a series of lines and make their widths the same or their colors the same.

The Distribute command in the style editor now uses a Jenks distribution to distribute the values between the styles.

Adobe Illustrator export revamp. The Adobe Illustrator exporter (now tested with CS5 as well as CS4) is significantly improved, including support for raster image output, use of font styles matching those in the document, the addition of legends for each layer (conveniently placed outside of the pastboard, so you can just drag them in if you want them), segregation of text and objects to different layers, and much more sophisticated text layout for labels. When exporting lines with labels, the lines may either be labeled per-segment or per line. Polygons may be labeled either inside (centered within) or outside the polygon.

Geocoding Options are saved per layer, so you can have multiple layers in the same document use different specific geocoding options (these would include the mapping of columns into address parts, additions of static data like state/province names, city names, or countries).

Geocoder options are saved per mapset. These options apply to all layers within a mapset until changed. These settings determine whether server-based (Bing) geocoding or algorithm based internal geocoding is used.

When geocoding data on import, geocoding settings are saved with the new layer to promote easy re-geocoding or coding of uncoded featuers.

Tiger geocoder now will geocode addresses without Zip codes if Zip is specified in the geocoder preferences

When resizing in Map Layout, holding the shift key constrains to any natural size ratio (useful mostly on maps), and holding the option key centers the resize on the original center point of the object

Buffering now uses GCD to maximize multi-core processing power

Buffers now can be made in either the Map CRS (now default) or the layer's

Layers loaded by reference can now be reloaded from the Refresh Data item in the Layer menu

Export Map format now saved in document. Will default to the last export type you used in this document, for new documents, it uses the last export type used on any document.

Export Web Map now emits XHTML compliant HTML

Add support for overviews in warping

Bounding boxes now correctly updated during changes to projections on images. This includes dealing with bounding box changes that are due to changing the north orientation.

Make bad poly detection during editing more robust

Support for images with GCPs

64-bit internal math for all projected and unprojected values (previously was just original data, not projected data)

Substantial speedup in projecting data

Significant drawing speed-ups

Dramatic drawing speed increase on points and non-stroked lines

WMS Servers may now be browsed and have data retrieved if they require authentication (previously only open servers were supported)

Add Fit Display to Georeferencing editor to immmediately align the current image to the display

Add Flip Image to Georeferencing editor to speed process of dealing with vertical alignment

Hitting the space bar while georeferencing images now toggles between the last transparency value and completely transparent

Dramatic speed increase for drawing new scalable symbols

Cartographica Version 1.1.3 (build 196)

Version 1.1.3

1.1.3 is the third bug-fix release for version 1.1 of Cartographica and contains essential fixes for all current 1.1 users.

The primary focus of 1.1.3 is to fix certain bugs in the 1.1 release.

We have also made a number of performance and stability fixes in this release. And, in addition, we have made some changes to the Map Layout system to try to further enhance the experience of working with that portion of the program.

This is the last planned release before version 1.2, the next feature release. Version 1.2 will require Snow Leopard and will be Intel only. Clearly, we will release a 1.1.4 as necessary to fix critical bugs in 1.1.3 prior to the release of 1.2. For more information on the 1.2 transition and information on the 1.2 beta program once it begins, please watch our blog.

Map Layout changes

In response to feedback from users (thanks, folks!) we've made some more modifications to the Map Layout window and how it interacts to make it more straightforward to use. In summary, the key phrase is direct manipulation.

Now, Cartographica will always allow the creation of a new element, regardless of whether a map or other element is selected. If you don't have a map selected, it will attach the new element to the map attached to the selected element. If you have no element selected, it will attach it to any map that is in the window. Only in the case of having no maps will it not create the compass, scale, or legend boxes.

Cartographica will always create a map with data in it when you drag out the map box. By default, it will use whatever maps are open and saved. If you don't have any opened and saved maps, it will be empty, as it had been in the past. If you want another map other than the one chosen for you by Cartographica, use the Control-Click (right click if you have multi-button capability on your mouse) to activate the Change Map command.

Printing changes

There is now an additional option when printing from the Map window that provides for printing of just the area that is visible in the window. This it a toggle and the preview in the print window will update to indicate what will show up on the print out.

Raster printing changes

For both Map Layouts and Map windows, we have now adjusted the resolution at which raster images are printed. Previously, printing happened at 72dpi due to operating system mechanisms. We now provide those images to the OS at 300dpi by default (user adjustable to 72, 150,300, or 600 right now). If you need to print out high-resolution images, of you you would like to have higher-resolution images in PDFs saved from the print window, now you have the ability to adjust that.

Features and Fixes in 1.1.3

Add support for printing just the currently visible extent in the map window

Add toolbar to Map View window

Fix cursor in Map Layout window when interacting with Map Views. If the Map View is active (focus box around it), then the cursors are updated, otherwise they are not.

Make sure that page layout is saved for the Map Set and Map Layout documents

Print sheet for large Map View Window now shows up within the window, instead of within the original Map Window.

Add support for user-adjustable raster resolution on printing

Fix bug where a parameterized version of a cell would be used in the legend view incorrectly where the parent style was expected if the legend required scrolling

Fix crash that could happen when adding/removing substyles on layers with many features

Fix crash when clicking on automatically generated range names in legend window

Fix bug which could cause crash soon after closing a window with only one layer that takes a very long time to draw.

Fix crash in, or immediately after, closing Map Layout windows

Fix bug that would cause the KDM window to set bounds in layer coordinates instead of map coordinates, causing confusing KDM results

Fix error which could cause the text on printed compasses to be too large

Fix Compass drawing so that the characters and the line don't intersect

Fix bug that would cause Analysis layers to override their existing style (opacity) when loading from disk. Caused opacity to be lost during subsequent loads.

Fix stray handles that occur during deletion in Map Layout window

Default style name for new parameter ranges is now not set, removing the likelihood of creating a bunch of style parameter ranges named "Non-matching"

Move compass picture and text further apart

Use consistent number of decimals on legends

Cartographica Version 1.1.2 (build 190)

Version 1.1.2

1.1.2 is the second bug-fix release and minor feature release for version 1.1 of Cartographica and contains essential fixes for all current 1.1 users.

The primary focus of 1.1.2 is to fix certain bugs in the 1.1 release. We have also added some features (mostly UI changes) since the last version due to input from users and ease-of-use concerns, especially with the Map Layout window.

Of particular importance were a bug in the 10.5 code for handling selection and editing which caused information to come up in the wrong place on the screen, a printing problem from the standard map view that would cause a blank page to be printed, and a bug in our undo handling code for the Map Layout that caused Map Layout editing to be fragile (even if you were not using Undo directly).

In the Map Layout UI, we have now added a tool bar and you can now add new items to the Map Layout window by clicking on the relevant tool in the tool bar and then dragging a new box in the window. We hope this will improve the workflow substantially. Note: for Scale, Legend, and Compass, you must have a map selected at the time you create the new element for it to show up correctly.

We have also made a number of performance and stability fixes in this release.

This is the last planned release before version 1.2, the next feature release. Version 1.2 will require Snow Leopard and will be Intel only. Clearly, we will release a 1.1.3 as necessary to fix critical bugs in 1.1.2 prior to the release of 1.2.
Cartographica Version 1.1 (171)

Version 1.1

1.1 will be the last major release to support the PowerPC and Leopard, all new feature development will be Intel-only and will require Snow Leopard.

Major changes

Big Raster File support

The 1.0 version of Cartographica worked well with small raster files (such as those for an area that you might download via WMS), but generally didn't deal well in terms of performance with very large files (5000x5000 pixels or greater). This version removes those limitations and has been tested with files over 5GB in size.

We have also introduced a dedicated layer style window for raster layers that shows the current color palette and provides both a well to drop new palettes on and a way to describe the range for the color palette selected. This is particularly useful for data rasters, such as DEM, which contain floating-point or integer information instead of colors at each point.

Along with this, we've made it so that two raster datasets (images or sampled data) that are placed in the same layer (use the Merge Layers function to do this after selecting the 2+ layers) use the same palette over the same range. In automatic mode, the range is the range of all images in the set. In manual mode, the range is determined by the user.

Editing

We've implemented a Merge Selected Features command, allowing you to join geometries. This will work best for overlapping geometries, as they will result in a single part. If the parts are discontiguous (even if in a very small way), then they will be considered separate parts and you will end up with a multi-part geometry.

Selecting

Another significant new feature is selecting from one layer using any other polygonal layer (either a selection therein or the entire contents of the layer). There are two modes for this selection: intersection (features where any point is contained in) and containment (features where all points are contained in the selection area). To use this feature, click on the layer to select with in the Layer Stack and choose Edit > Select On Another Layer.

Exploring

We have also added pop-up information windows. If you hold down the option key while moving over any item in the selected layer, a small window will pop-up with information about the item you are hovering over. What information shows up is dependent on the Layer Info panel. The "name" is determined by the layer's Name Field setting. Other data included is dependent upon checking off information in the field list "pop up" checkbox. This information is also exported to the KML exporter as part of a table in the Description block that shows up when you click on an item.

There have been big changes to our filtering mechanism. Now, if you initiate a filter, you will see a drop-down area at the top of the Map View that contains a much more flexible seach system. And/or and multiple-field data filtering is now possible and easy with this new system. The existing filter box works as a short-cut, translating queries into the new system, which can then be edited.

Coordinate Systems

In the projection panel, we've reorganized the tree view, so that it provides a better browsing experience and have finally put the detail view to work showing the key parameters in available projections.

Thanks to approval by the Canadian authorities, we have incorporated NTv2 support into version 1.1 to provide accurate mapping between NAD27 and NAD83 within Canada.

File/Data import

Vastly improved character set support in all facets of the program's import capabilities. MapInfo data sets now support the 3 supported character sets (WindowsLatin1, MacRoman, and Neutral). Text/Table import supports a variety of character sets, including automatic, UTF-8, WindowsLatin1, and others. If you are using a non UTF-8 character set, it's best to set that when opening the file.

For Table import, we have also expanded control of how Cartographica interprets numbers and dates. Previously, Cartographica assumed that numbers and dates were formatted based on the system settings. Now that can be overridden to support a variety of other date and number formats. Particularly useful if the data set you are using started its life in another part of the world. The Table importer also gains manual and auto-detected header row handling (previously, it always used the first row of the file as the header row), and improved automatic detection of column separators (as well as the ability to specify separators manually).

File import has also been tweaked for speed and better progress information.

KML import has been enhanced to allow importing files that contain multi-geometry layers (previously this would cause an error, leaving the layer partially imported) which now load into one layer for each geometry type.

We have updated our external libraries, including moving to GDAL 1.6.2 (the latest release), which improved support for BNA, GML, NITF, SGI, Tiff, ECW, XPlane. Further, we've made some changes to our code to better handle errors in some of the incorporated libraries, such as JPEG and ECW, that previously would crash with corrupted data.

Due to a change in how we advertise to the system that we know about files, you should now be able to double-click on a lot more GIS file types and have them show up directly in Cartographica (many of them will import into a new map because we can't export to the formats, so keep that in mind when you're editing data). This also means that you are able to drag and drop many more files onto the icon of Cartographica in the dock--which opens the file in a new window. Not to be confused with dragging a file to an existing map document, which imports the layer into the existing document.

Export

Illustrator export has been enhanced to export the current visibility status, so you will see something closer to what you see on the screen when you export it to Illustrator.

KML export has been enhanced to include visibility status of layers (and features, when hidden by style), use of the "pretty name" as the name for exported features (this can be set by changing the Name Field in the Layer Info window). Further, exported KML is "pretty printed" so that it's easier to follow if you are reading it manually. And lastly, fields selected for inclusion in the Pop-up window are automatically exported as the data for the KML description (the box that comes up when you click on a feature in Google Earth).

We have also enhanced the Map exporter to optionally not export invisible layers, thus reducing the file size and complexity when exporting.

Analysis

Calculation of the nearest distance between the points in a point layer and the features in another layer has been added. This can be used to calculate nearest neighbor to objects in the same layer or nearest distance to points, lines, or edges of polygons. Note that distance to polygons does not treat specially the case of being "inside" of a polygon. So, if your point is 5 meters inside of a polygon, the distance will be 5 meters from the polygon, just as it would be if the point were 5 meters outside of the polygon.

Kernel Density maps have been enhanced with the introduction of 5 new Kernel types: Quartic (or spherical), Exponential (Negative), Triangular (Conic), Uniform (Flat), Paraboloid/quadratic (Epanechnikov) in addition ot the Normal (Gaussian) kernel that had been supported in previous versions. Some of these kernels are quite a bit faster, owing to their ignoring points outside of their bandwidth(h).

Geocoding

Cartographica now supports Tiger/Line Shapefiles (those produced by the Census bureau after 2006) for Geocoding. To use these files, go to the Bureau's site and download the "All Edges" shapefile and then follow the usual instructions for geocoding. Specifics are detailed in our Knowledgebase article, Geocoding with TIGER/Line Shapefiles

Map Layout

Map Layout now has a simple Compass layout function. This provides an arrow, with optional text at either a manually-specified angle, or an angle that is computed by Cartographica. When using automatic, take care that you spot check it for validity, as it is a complex calculation. As with other text-containing pieces of Map Layout, you can also change style and text.

The scale box has also received some new options. Units can be controlled and the scale itself may be restricted to a fixed size (in units) or tracks the size of the box. If you're using the fixed unit size and the box is too small, units are reduced by a factor of 2 until it does fit in the box.

Scripting

AppleScript scripting has been thoroughly re-tested and is working well again (it had been broken in the development release to date due to some structural changes).

User Interface

Changes too numerous to mention have been made to the UI. Many of these changes are subtle and help to make the UI more uniform, some are small features in themselves (like Zoom to Natural Fit for images).

We have also created new icons for most documents, including adding a specific icon for the raster formats that we support.

Updates

For those interested in living on the "wild side", the Preferences panel now allows you to be prompted about newly available updates in the development and beta branches as well as the final releases. Release versions have been thoroughly tested, which isn't the case with either beta or development versions, so please be careful when using these. We try to test as much as possible between versions, but bugs sometimes get through, so back up your data when working with these versions (frankly, back it up anyway, that's what Time Machine is for!).

Significant bug fixes

1.1 contains a number of significant bug fixes for bugs that affected some users regularly. Unfortunately, the few common ones were difficult to track down and could not be immediately patched into the 1.0 codeline, so work-arounds needed to be used until 1.1.

There has been a long-standing bug in mapsets saved with references to multi-layer imagery files. This could cause significant problems, especially if the mapset is loaded and saved multiple times. To resolve this problem, it will be necessary to remove the existing image reference layers and re-import them.

We have also fixed a variety of undo-related bugs in Map Layout and enhanced the Map Layout undo titles to be more representative (there shouldn't be any more unqualified "Undo" menu items any more, so please note these if you find them).
